Byyr’tharhiyh, or “The Hands” in Common.
Also commonly called “Crowned Spirits”
Appearance: To describe the appearance of a Hand is a difficult thing. For one, they change on both their overall emotion (constant emotion, though. A Hand does not have the ability to alter their emotions well, if at all) and location of where they were created. They are very spiritual, Elemental creatures, and must represent where the Gods decided to place them. If one were to be created in the forest, it would more or less represent its home by forming into a tree or a pile of leaves, but the possibilities are generally endless. They are also the fairies in the wind, the mermaids in the ocean, and the spirits of the forest. Their description can only be a vague one, as they change in appearance from every Hand to the next. It is also a difficult task, as Hands are not often seen. In fact, they are normally only seen by the commoner if they choose for it to happen, but that does not make it impossible to catch one while it wasn’t paying attention, either.
Abilities: By older, more spiritual folk, Hands are thought of as demigods, but even that is a loose term. They do in fact have fantastical powers, but from their original design, they do not have the ability to physically interfere with the rest of the world. To make things clearer, the term “Hands” stems from “Hands
of Fate.” They are creations of the Gods themselves, and are here on this world to guide the journeymen around the world. But they are also there to protect the beauty of their land. If one feels that a man or creature is interfering with the world around them, then it is known for a Hand to take their life. But Hands are not allowed to mettle in huge affairs, either.
History: The Hands of Fate were created as Rein and Nol crashed into the battlefield, hanging onto their lives. The Gods, as they created the Guardians, also created the Hands, which were there to make sure the world was pushed in certain directions, hoping to disallow such a cataclysmic battle to shake the world again. The Battle of the Apocalypse woke the Gods in their ignorant slumbers, and the Hands were made within only one Thought. They were originally created to assure that the Guardians were going to find out just who they were, and how they were going to change the world around them.
Some commonly known Hands have been given names by the locals of each area. Matune, for example, was found by many lost men in the Matune Desert. He is the long, snake-like creature that guided Leif, the Guardian of the Earth, along his journey, and kept him from dying in that desert. There is also the Princess, which rests in the northern, icy lakes of Andriath. She is known for speaking to Gallagher on his voyage to find Nol, but did not guide him at all. Rumor has it that she said very little to the man, but somehow forced him out from his search, and onto his journey to meet with the other Guardians. There is also the Arliah, or the jaded fairies in the winds of Valanthus. They are known to whisper lies to the lonely, often driving them completely mad.
Today, they are often treated only as rumors and wives tales. But from time to time they will peak out from their hidden ways, and confuse a lone knight or a group that lost their way.
Transportation: Hands of Fate are destined to stay in the area in which they were born, and because of that they are unable to travel very far. Matune, for example, was forced to slumber in the desert, and only there. The same went with the Princess. But others also have a wider array of movement. For example, if they are the Hands of the clouds, or of the rivers…
Religion: They are the spirits from other realms. They make what some think of as just religion into truth.
Language: Hands of Fate often speak in the ancient tongue, and that is where their original name is stemmed. But they will quickly learn the language of the wanderer by listening to syllables and phrases. Those languages are quickly learned and quickly forgotten, however, as a Hand of Fate often forgets who or what they had helped only minutes after.
Society: Hands of Fate often live long, lonesome lives, but can also be accompanied by closer Hands in their environment, or can even travel in small packs, depending on what they represent. They can also have complex civilizations, as often spoke of in the Thille Forest, deep in the center of Andriath. It is said that there are great spirits that live within there, often speaking of the politics of the world. Laughter has been heard from the Thille Forest for a very long time.
In The World: They guide it.
