The Mysteries of Enchanting
By Mason Vell, Brotherhood of Cosmologists
Enchanting is sometimes confused with Animism. In fact, Animism is a specialized offshoot of Enchanting. Enchanting is far more subtle. It simply involves weaving Elemental energy into simple items. Anything can be enchanted, though not in the same way golems are animated. Most people know Enchanting for the weapons and artifacts of legend. A sword with an enchantment that makes it unbreakable. Armor that freezes weapons which touch it. A wand that conjures storms with a simple wave. But this is only the surface. Yes, Enchanters can do these sort of things, though no mortal can weave the unending spells of old. Those strong in Enchanting can still produce amazing things with spells that will last for many, many years.
Weapons and armor are both commonly enchanted still. Many Enchanters have become rich in times of war when patrons will pay greatly so their army has an upper hand over others. However, many things can be enchanted. A Fire Enchanter my enchant a teapot so that it will boil the tea without need of fire. Some magi have payed for a Psychic Enchanter to enchant their doors to open at the will of the mage. With a little imagination and a bit of experimentation there is an endless number of uses for Enchanting. Rather than try to list everything I could possibly think of I will instead go into a bit more detail on the Elemental limitations of enchantments.
It goes without saying that an Enchanter can only create enchantments compatible with his or her own Element. A Fire mage could enchant a blade that burst into flames but not one that was electrified. With that simple thinking aside, each Element has certain effects of enchantments. Fire enchantments deal with heat, fire, and light. Water enchantments deal with the cold, ice, and water. Air enchantments usually involve speed, electricity, or storms. Earth enchantments made things stronger, firmer, sharper. Psychic enchantments are tougher to describe. More often than not they mimick some sort of ability that could be achieved through telekinetics, although are stories of Psychic Enchanters who have enchanted pieces of glass, crystals, or even just a square piece of metal or wood to play back a certain image or scene when the proper word is spoken. In the end Enchanting is too open and only bounded by imagination and skill, a magic with endless possibilities.
