A Look at Animism
By Gregory Methula, Cosmologist
Animism is a difficult subset of magic that is used to create golems. Golems are creatures, usually in the rough shape of humans (perhaps bigger or smaller, depending on the task) or perhaps in the shape of an animal for a pet. The first requirement, of course, is some sort of statue or carving that can be used for a golem. After such a specimen is acquired the Animist will go through a process similar to enchanting something. The Animism process is much longer and requires more power than other enchanting. The Animism fills the vessel with Elemental energy and the energy becomes part of the vessel. Then the Animist, through an act of will, controls the golem. Golems usually can only respond to simple commands and are tailored to the needs of the Animists.
Some Animists have created small golems to be used in mining efforts or as spies, since they can fit into smaller spaces than most could and the Animist can, because of their connection, hear and see through the golem. Psychic Animists can not only do this but can inhabit the golem entirely and move it about like their own being. Golems are sometimes used in combat training as well, to simulate an enemy. Fire golems are usually able to perform combat commands rather easily. Other times golems are made larger, and perhaps with some sort of seat or harness so the Animist can use them as a mode of transportation. (A note, an Animist suggested that a quadrapedal golem, like a golem horse, makes for a much smoother ride). Golems are created out of necessity or convenience, and they are usually sculpted specifically for the necessary task. As a result some Animists have picked up sculpting - whether with wood, clay, or stone - as a hobby to support their magic.
An interesting use for golems brought up in the past few decades is as siege weapons. Several Animists of the same element working together can animate a very large golem that can be used to get over castle walls, break through them, go over moats, and demolish doors. The Animists must coordinate efforts in moving the golem, but a well trained team could end seiges very quickly. Some Animists, also members of the Cosmologists, are working on a flying golem. However, many problems have been encountered thus far and it may be quite a few years before anything comes of it. There is little limit to what golems can do with the proper shell and a skilled Animist. Psychic Animists are well-known for making golems that are great human mimicks, as they can process more complex commands and actually hold simple conversations. All Animists are quite skilled, though, since skill is required to do anything in this field of magic.
